Strong rains lead to severe damage in Uttarakhand, prompting evacuation and ongoing rescue operations.

Heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district has resulted in significant destruction, with reports indicating that at least ten individuals are currently missing. This situation arose as torrential rains caused several houses in Nandanagar to be buried under debris. The Indian Express has highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that this incident occurred just two days after cloudburst-related floods and landslides claimed the lives of 23 people in Dehradun and surrounding areas.

District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari provided details regarding the ongoing rescue efforts and the number of individuals unaccounted for. In Kuntari village, where the impact was particularly severe, eight individuals, including four family members, have been reported missing. The extent of the damage in this village is alarming, with approximately half a dozen houses swept away by the relentless rainfall. Tiwari noted that the number of missing persons might increase, as initial assessments indicated that between ten and twelve houses had been completely destroyed.

In addition to those missing in Kuntari village, two more individuals are unaccounted for in Dhurma village, where the Moksha River has caused extensive damage to several buildings. The missing persons from Kuntari village include Kunwar Singh, his wife Kanta Devi, and their sons Vikas and Vishal, along with Narendra Singh, Jagdamba Prasad, Bhaga Devi, and Deveshwari Devi. The two individuals reported missing from Dhurma are Guman Singh and Mamta Devi.

In response to the disaster, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s office confirmed that the district administration and police were promptly deployed to the affected areas upon receiving information about the incident. Many residents have already been evacuated to ensure their safety. The Chief Minister has emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts in relief and rescue operations, ensuring that all necessary resources reach the affected families as quickly as possible.

As the situation continues to develop, the focus remains on the ongoing rescue operations aimed at locating the missing individuals and providing assistance to those impacted by the severe weather conditions. The local authorities are working diligently to assess the full extent of the damage and to facilitate the distribution of relief materials to every family affected by this disaster.
