Two constables suspended following the alleged assault that led to the student’s death in Bhopal.

A tragic incident has occurred in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, where a 22-year-old engineering student, Udit Gaayki, lost his life after reportedly being beaten by two police constables. The assault allegedly took place around 1:30 am on the night between Thursday and Friday while Gaayki was returning home from a party.

The two police personnel involved in the incident, identified as Santosh Bamniya and Saurabh Arya, were on night patrol when the confrontation happened. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police for Bhopal Zone-2, Vivek Singh, the incident began when Gaayki and his friends were spotted after breaking a bottle on the road. While his friends managed to escape on their two-wheeler, Gaayki attempted to run away upon seeing the officers approaching.

Singh explained that the police personnel pursued Gaayki and caught him in a nearby lane, where the alleged assault took place. A friend of Gaayki, who was driving him home, recounted that he heard sounds of a struggle. Upon reaching the scene, he noticed that Gaayki’s shirt was torn and his body bore numerous marks, particularly on his head.

Reports indicate that the constables demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 to cease their assault, as stated by the friends of the victim. In addition, purported CCTV footage of the encounter, which has circulated widely on social media, shows one constable striking Gaayki with a baton while the other restrained him.

A post-mortem examination conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhopal revealed that Gaayki suffered from pancreas hemorrhage and injuries consistent with being struck by a baton. Following the incident, the two constables were suspended, and an investigation is currently underway to examine the circumstances surrounding Gaayki’s death.
