Investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death continues as police rule out foul play initially.

The Singapore Police Force has stated that preliminary investigations into the death of singer Zubeen Garg do not suggest foul play. The police indicated that the ongoing investigation may require up to three additional months before it is completed. Following the conclusion of this probe, the findings will be submitted to the State Coroner, a judicial officer responsible for determining whether a Coroner’s Inquiry is necessary. If such an inquiry is conducted, the results will be made public.

In a statement, the Singapore Police emphasized their commitment to conducting a thorough and professional investigation, acknowledging that this process takes time. They urged patience and understanding from all parties involved and requested the public to refrain from speculation and the dissemination of unverified information.

On October 1, the Indian High Commission received a copy of Garg’s autopsy report along with preliminary findings related to his death. Earlier, the police had already ruled out any foul play. Zubeen Garg, a prominent Assamese singer, passed away on September 19 while on a yacht trip in Singapore, just a day before he was set to perform at the North East India Festival, an event organized by the Indian government and supported by the Indian High Commission in Singapore, alongside the Assam Association and the North East India Association.

A death certificate issued by Singaporean authorities on September 20 cited drowning as the cause of Garg’s death. In relation to the incident, seven individuals have been arrested. Among those detained are Garg’s manager, Siddharatha Sharma, North East India Festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, and two musicians who were present with Garg on the yacht—Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta. Additionally, Garg’s cousin, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sandipan Garg, who accompanied him to Singapore, along with two of the singer’s personal security officers, have also been arrested and are currently in judicial custody.

Reports indicate that a Special Investigation Team, led by Indian Police Services officer Munna Prasad Gupta, is anticipated to travel to Singapore next week. Their purpose will be to coordinate with the Singapore Police and gather further information regarding the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death.

The aftermath of Zubeen Garg’s death has sparked significant unrest and anger among his fans in Assam, leading to a series of arrests and detentions of those protesting. This incident has also prompted discussions about unity in Assam during a time characterized by divisive politics.
