This Code of Conduct outlines the ethical, professional, and behavioral standards expected from all members of Indian Press Union (IPU), operated under its legal entity IPU Media Association, a Section 8 organization registered in India.
All members, applicants, and representatives of IPU are required to read, understand, and strictly comply with this Code of Conduct as a condition of membership.
1. Professional Integrity
Members shall:
- Act with honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times
- Present information truthfully and avoid false, misleading, or exaggerated claims
- Maintain accuracy, fairness, and responsibility in media-related activities
Any form of dishonesty or misrepresentation is strictly prohibited.
2. Ethical Journalism & Communication
Members are expected to:
- Follow ethical journalism standards and responsible communication practices
- Avoid sensationalism, misinformation, hate speech, or defamatory content
- Respect individual privacy, dignity, and human rights
IPU does not endorse or support unethical or unlawful reporting.
3. Lawful Conduct
Members must:
- Comply with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations of India
- Refrain from activities that may bring legal risk to IPU
- Cooperate with lawful investigations when required
Illegal conduct may result in immediate termination of membership.
4. Use of IPU Name & Credentials
Members shall use IPU membership credentials responsibly and only for legitimate professional identification purposes.
Members shall not:
- Misuse IPU ID cards, certificates, or branding
- Imply government authority, influence, or power
- Threaten, intimidate, or influence any person or authority using IPU name
Any misuse will result in strict disciplinary action.
5. Independence & Accountability
Members act in their individual capacity and not as representatives of IPU unless expressly authorized in writing.
IPU shall not be responsible for personal opinions, actions, or professional work carried out by members.
6. Respectful Behavior
Members must:
- Treat colleagues, authorities, and the public with respect
- Avoid abusive, discriminatory, or harassing behavior
- Maintain decorum in physical, digital, and public interactions
7. Conflict of Interest
Members shall disclose any conflict of interest that may affect their professional judgment or integrity.
Members must avoid:
- Using membership for personal, political, or commercial gain
- Engaging in activities that conflict with IPU objectives
8. Compliance & Cooperation
Members shall cooperate with IPU’s internal reviews, verification processes, and disciplinary procedures.
Failure to cooperate may lead to suspension or termination.
9. Disciplinary Action
Violation of this Code of Conduct may result in:
- Warning or notice
- Temporary suspension of membership
- Permanent termination of membership
- Public disassociation from IPU
IPU’s decision in disciplinary matters shall be final and binding.
10. Amendments
IPU reserves the right to amend or update this Code of Conduct at any time. Continued membership after such updates constitutes acceptance of the revised Code.
11. Governing Law & Jurisdiction
This Code of Conduct shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of India. All disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of competent courts located in Uttar Pradesh, India.
