US President highlights NATO’s dependence on Russian oil and suggests tariffs to weaken China’s influence.
United States President Donald Trump expressed his concerns regarding the ongoing purchase of Russian oil by some NATO members, labeling it as “shocking.” His remarks come in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the need for a united response from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which comprises 32 countries, including the US and various European Union members.
On Saturday, Trump conveyed his readiness to impose new sanctions on Moscow if all NATO members agree to implement punitive measures against Russia. He emphasized the importance of halting Russian oil purchases, stating that such transactions undermine the alliance’s negotiating power with Moscow. Trump’s comments were made public through a social media post, which he referred to as a letter addressed to NATO members and the global community.
In addition to his call for an end to Russian oil imports, Trump suggested that NATO consider imposing tariffs ranging from 50% to 100% on China. This proposal is aimed at curtailing China’s significant role as an importer of Russian oil. He asserted that these tariffs could assist in efforts to conclude the conflict in Ukraine and that their implementation could be re-evaluated once the war comes to an end.
Trump’s statements reflect his ongoing criticism of countries that continue to import Russian oil, including India. He has previously claimed that such imports contribute to the financing of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. In August, the Trump administration took steps to double tariffs on goods imported from India to 50% as a response to the country’s dealings with Russian oil, which he viewed as contrary to the interests of NATO and the US.
Despite the US’s efforts to impose sanctions and economic measures against Russia since the onset of the Ukraine war in February 2022, Trump has indicated that more action is necessary. He believes that imposing tariffs on China would help to disrupt the relationship between Beijing and Moscow, thereby exerting additional pressure on Russia.
