Research shows that political tensions have exacerbated anti-Indian sentiment on social media platforms.

The Center for the Study of Organized Hate has released a study indicating that online hate against Indians has serious consequences for minority communities. The research highlights a troubling correlation between the recent tariff dispute between India and the United States, specific incidents, and a notable increase in racist social media posts targeting Indians.

Analyzing 5,124 posts on the social media platform X from July 1 to September 7, the study found that 680 high-engagement posts had amassed 281 million views. Among these, 121 posts utilized anti-Indian slurs, garnering 74 million views. A significant portion of the posts framed Indians as “invaders” and “job thieves,” with immigration and deportation themes being the primary focus, resulting in 474 posts and 111 million views during this period.

This surge in online hate reflects the idea that news and policy tensions can act as “predictable accelerants of racist content.” The diplomatic relationship between New Delhi and Washington has faced strain in recent months, particularly following statements from US President Donald Trump regarding tariffs and his claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. New Delhi has pushed back against Trump’s assertions, emphasizing that the ceasefire was achieved through bilateral negotiations and describing the tariffs as “extremely unfortunate.”
