S.L. Bhyrappa’s literary legacy ends with his passing in Bengaluru at the age of 94.

SL Bhyrappa, a prominent figure in Kannada literature, passed away in Bengaluru on Wednesday at the age of 94. The writer had been dealing with age-related health issues and was receiving treatment at the Jayadev Memorial Rashtrotthana Hospital and Research Centre for the last three months. His death was confirmed to have resulted from a cardiac arrest, occurring at 2:38 pm.

Bhyrappa’s literary journey began with the publication of his first novel, Bheemakaya, in 1958. Over the decades, he authored a total of 25 novels, with his last work, Uttarakanda, released in 2017. This novel provided a fresh perspective on the Hindu epic Ramayana, focusing on the experiences of women. His works have been translated into multiple languages, broadening their reach and impact beyond Kannada-speaking audiences.

His contributions to literature were recognized with several prestigious awards. In 2010, he received the Saraswati Samman for his novel Mandra, published in 2001. In 2023, Bhyrappa was conferred with the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors, acknowledging his significant influence on Indian literature.

In his later years, Bhyrappa became known for his pro-Hindutva views, which garnered both support and criticism. His 2007 novel Avarana sparked controversy due to its portrayal of Muslim rulers and themes of religious conversion. Despite the polarizing nature of some of his work, his writings have continued to resonate with many readers, prompting reflection and dialogue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, stating that India has lost a “towering stalwart who stirred our conscience and delved deep into the soul of India.” He described Bhyrappa as a fearless thinker whose thought-provoking works enriched Kannada literature and inspired generations to engage more deeply with societal issues.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also paid tribute to Bhyrappa, acknowledging the vast readership he cultivated through his intimate writing style. He noted that the writer’s passing has left a significant void in the literary world. Siddaramaiah shared his condolences on social media, emphasizing the impact Bhyrappa’s work had on his readers and the literary community.

In a heartfelt message, Siddaramaiah expressed his sorrow over the loss, remarking that Bhyrappa’s unique writing style had attracted a loyal following. The Chief Minister extended his sympathies to Bhyrappa’s family and the larger reading community, recognizing the profound influence the writer had on Kannada literature.
