Strong reactions from officials and political leaders follow the tragic incident at the rally in Karur.

The stampede that occurred during actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district has resulted in a rising toll of 39 fatalities, as reported by Chief Minister MK Stalin. Among those who lost their lives are 16 women and eight children. The incident, which took place shortly after 7:30 PM at Veluchamy Puram, also left over 150 individuals hospitalized in Karur and Tiruchirappalli.

Vijay, who is the chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, was addressing a large crowd from atop his campaign vehicle when chaos erupted. Eyewitness accounts indicate that many attendees began to faint due to the overwhelming crowd size. The situation worsened when some supporters climbed a tree for a better view; a branch ultimately broke, causing them to fall onto the crowd below, which contributed to the ensuing panic.

In response to the tragic events, the Tamil Nadu government has initiated an investigation led by a commission headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan. This probe aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the stampede and ascertain how such a disaster could have occurred. Chief Minister Stalin has also announced a compensation package for the victims, pledging Rs 10 lakh to the families of those who died and Rs 1 lakh for the injured.

Following the incident, the Karur Police took action by registering a first information report (FIR) against VP Mathiyazhaga, the district secretary of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Charges include attempt to murder and culpable homicide, as well as actions that could endanger the safety of others due to negligence. This step reflects the seriousness of the situation and the need for accountability.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Vijay expressed his profound sorrow over the loss of life, stating that his heart is shattered and that he is experiencing indescribable pain. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam also extended their prayers for the recovery of those injured and receiving treatment in hospitals.

Reactions from various political leaders have been swift. President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her anguish regarding the tragic loss of lives, extending her condolences to the bereaved families while wishing for the speedy recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as deeply saddening and expressed his thoughts with the families affected by the tragedy.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, too, expressed his sorrow over the incident. He urged party workers to offer comprehensive support to the victims and their families, encouraging collaboration with local authorities in relief efforts.
