Modi emphasizes the importance of Trump’s efforts for long-term peace in the Gaza conflict
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his support for the peace efforts in Gaza spearheaded by United States President Donald Trump. Modi referred to the proposal as a “significant step forward” for achieving peace between the Palestinian and Israeli communities. His comments came shortly after Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, indicated that it was willing to accept parts of a 20-point peace plan proposed by Trump.
On social media, Modi highlighted the indications surrounding the potential release of hostages, stating that this development marks a crucial advancement toward peace. He reiterated India’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at establishing a durable and just peace in the region. Modi welcomed Trump’s leadership, which he believes is pivotal as peace initiatives in Gaza progress.
Trump’s announcement on Monday outlined a 20-point plan intended to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He emphasized that the parties involved are nearing a resolution, stating, “we are beyond very close” to concluding the hostilities. Modi further elaborated on Tuesday that the proposed plan presents a viable pathway for long-term peace, security, and development for both the Palestinian and Israeli people, as well as for the broader West Asia region.
As part of the plan, Trump had set a deadline for Hamas to agree to the proposal by Sunday at 6 p.m. Washington DC time. He warned that failure to comply could lead to severe consequences for the group. Following this ultimatum, Trump reported that Hamas had expressed its willingness to release hostages in line with the plan and was ready to commence negotiations immediately, suggesting that the group might be prepared for a lasting peace.
Alongside these developments, Trump has called on Israel to halt its military operations in Gaza, ensuring the safe and swift retrieval of hostages. Despite Hamas agreeing to certain aspects of the peace proposal, its response did not address disarmament and appeared to reject the establishment of a proposed international “Board of Peace” intended to oversee Gaza under the plan. Instead, Hamas suggested it was willing to transfer governance of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian body composed of independent technocrats, relying on Palestinian national consensus and support from Arab and Islamic nations.
The backdrop to these negotiations includes a military offensive initiated by Israel in October 2023, following a deadly incursion by Hamas into southern Israel, which resulted in significant casualties. The ongoing conflict has led to extensive loss of life and suffering in Gaza, drawing international attention and calls for resolution. Previous ceasefire attempts have faltered due to disagreements, but the latest plan envisions a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza to facilitate the release of hostages.
Under the terms of the proposal, Hamas is expected to return all hostages within 72 hours of Israel’s acceptance, while Israel would subsequently release a number of Palestinian prisoners. The plan also outlines provisions for amnesty for Hamas members who commit to peaceful coexistence and agree to disarmament. Furthermore, it specifies that Gaza would be governed by a temporary, apolitical committee of Palestinians and international experts, overseen by the proposed “Board of Peace,” which is to include notable figures like former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
