Abhishek Banerjee Alleges Attack During Sonarpur Visit, Political Row Intensifies

Senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee alleged that he was attacked during a visit to Sonarpur, where he had gone to meet the family of a party worker who died in an incident that the party has described as post-election violence.

According to Banerjee, the incident occurred while he was interacting with people in the area. He emerged from the gathering with torn clothes and damaged spectacles. Banerjee claimed that the confrontation was planned and alleged that individuals from outside the locality were involved.

“The people of Sonarpur welcomed me. None of the local residents were involved,” Banerjee told reporters while describing the incident.

Television footage showed Banerjee being escorted through a crowd while wearing a protective helmet. Visuals also showed damage to his clothing and spectacles during the commotion.

Later, Banerjee was taken to a hospital in Kolkata for medical evaluation. He was subsequently visited by Mamata Banerjee.

The incident has triggered fresh political reactions in West Bengal, with leaders from different parties exchanging accusations over the events surrounding the visit.

Authorities have not publicly released any findings regarding the circumstances of the incident. Further details are awaited.
