In a significant development for the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the two warring factions of the party have come to a truce, agreeing to withdraw their disqualification petitions against each other’s Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). This conciliatory move occurred just two weeks after tensions flared within the party, highlighting the ongoing political maneuvering in Tamil Nadu.
The discord within the AIADMK was ignited during a crucial floor test held on May 13, where 25 MLAs, led by former ministers CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani, sided with the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. Among these, four MLAs—Maragatham Kumaravel, Sathyabama P, Jayakumar S, and Esakki Subaya—resigned from the AIADMK to join the TVK, signaling a significant shift in party loyalty. In contrast, 22 MLAs aligned with former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the TVK government, further deepening the rift.
On Wednesday, SP Velumani announced that both factions had formally retracted their disqualification petitions that were submitted to the Assembly Speaker, JCD Prabhakar. This announcement came amid speculation regarding the internal party dynamics and the potential for further fragmentation. Speaker Prabhakar confirmed the receipt of the withdrawal letters and indicated that a decision regarding the matter would be announced shortly.
Velumani emphasized that the recent disagreements should not be interpreted as a split within the AIADMK ranks, asserting that only “differences of opinion” existed among the members. He also mentioned that party general secretary Palaniswami has been urged to form a committee that would introspect on the recent electoral defeats, a move aimed at rejuvenating the party’s strategy for future challenges.
This reconciliation marks a critical juncture for the AIADMK, particularly as it navigates a politically charged environment in Tamil Nadu. The party, once a dominant force in the state, has faced several challenges in recent elections, leading to calls for unity and a reevaluation of strategies. The withdrawal of disqualification petitions not only alleviates immediate tensions but also sets the stage for potential collaboration and a unified front as the AIADMK prepares for future political battles.
