Bengal Government Declares 30 Lakh Women Ineligible for Cash Transfer Scheme

Bengal Government Declares 30 Lakh Women Ineligible for Cash Transfer Scheme

In a significant revelation, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that approximately 30 lakh beneficiaries of the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme, a cash transfer initiative aimed at empowering women, are deemed ineligible. This statement, reported by The Indian Express, has sparked discussions about the implications for these women who have been left out of the welfare program.

Adhikari, a leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), attributed the ineligibility to two primary reasons: numerous women had been removed from the electoral rolls during the recent special intensive revision, and others had not applied for Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). This announcement comes on the heels of comments made by Women and Child Development Minister Agnimitra Paul, who indicated on May 12 that women whose names were deleted from the voters’ list would not benefit from the upcoming Annapurna Bhandar scheme, which is set to replace Lakshmi Bhandar starting June 1.

The Annapurna Bhandar scheme promises an enhanced monthly cash assistance of Rs 3,000 for eligible women, a significant increase from the Rs 1,500 provided under its predecessor. The new initiative reflects the government’s aim to improve the welfare of women in West Bengal, but the process of determining eligibility is causing concern among those affected.

Chief Minister Adhikari emphasized the need for a “clean list” of beneficiaries to ensure that the new scheme is implemented effectively. He stated that the administration plans to issue fresh application forms for the Annapurna Bhandar program and conduct thorough verifications by the Women and Child Development department. This move is intended to give the government a clearer understanding of who qualifies for the assistance, alleviating concerns over misallocation of funds.

The shift from Lakshmi Bhandar to Annapurna Bhandar has raised questions regarding the fairness and accessibility of government assistance programs, particularly for women. Many beneficiaries are now left uncertain about their status and the potential impact on their livelihoods. As the state gears up for the implementation of the new scheme, the challenge will be to address these concerns and ensure that support reaches those who need it most.
