The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently acknowledged issues related to cybersecurity vulnerabilities within the OnMark portal, the digital platform employed for evaluating Class 12 board examination answer sheets. This statement follows reports of discrepancies that surfaced during the evaluation process, raising alarm among students and guardians alike.
In a press release, the CBSE confirmed that it has contained the identifiable vulnerabilities within the OnMark system and is actively working to address any other potential weaknesses. This reassurance comes in light of several complaints from students, who noted inconsistencies between their handwritten answer sheets and the scanned copies uploaded by the board. Such mismatches have sparked fears of answer sheet errors, which could significantly impact student evaluations.
Students seeking re-evaluation have reported a series of technical difficulties with the portal. Many have encountered issues such as failures during the payment process, delays in confirmation, and in some cases, requests to pay higher fees due to glitches in the system. These problems have added to the anxiety of students already facing the pressures of academic assessments.
A cybersecurity researcher named Nisarga Adhikary brought further attention to the issue when he claimed on social media that the OnMark portal was publicly accessible. He indicated that an analysis of the portal’s code revealed vulnerabilities that might allow unauthorized access to examiner accounts. On May 22, Adhikary reported these findings to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and publicly detailed his insights, prompting a broader discussion about the security of educational platforms.
In response to the ongoing concerns, the CBSE assured the public that it is rigorously monitoring the situation. The board emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the evaluation process and ensuring that students’ assessments are conducted fairly and accurately.
