The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has issued a summons to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee in connection with an investigation into alleged irregularities involving signatures on a document submitted to the West Bengal Assembly Secretariat.
According to reports, the investigation relates to a communication reportedly submitted in connection with the appointment of senior TMC leader Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay to a legislative position. Investigators are examining allegations that signatures of certain legislators appearing on the document may have been used without proper authorization. The authenticity of the signatures is currently under investigation.
As part of the probe, CID officials have questioned individuals associated with the matter and have sought clarification regarding the preparation and submission of the document. Reports indicate that a notice was served to Abhishek Banerjee asking him to appear before investigators for questioning.
Responding to the summons, Banerjee stated that he would cooperate with the investigation. He also said that he has previously appeared before investigative agencies whenever required and would continue to follow legal procedures.
The development has triggered political reactions in the state. Leaders from the Trinamool Congress have questioned the timing and nature of the investigation, while opposition parties have maintained that allegations concerning official documents should be examined through a transparent inquiry.
Officials have not announced any conclusions, and the matter remains under investigation. No allegations have been proven in court, and authorities are continuing to gather information before determining any further course of action.
Political observers note that the case is likely to remain under public scrutiny because of its connection to legislative procedures and the involvement of senior political leaders.
The CID investigation is ongoing.
