Delhi High Court Denies Interim Relief to Gymkhana Club Amid Eviction Controversy

The Delhi High Court made headlines on Tuesday by denying an urgent plea for interim relief from the prestigious Delhi Gymkhana Club, which is facing an eviction order from the Union government. The directive demands the club to vacate its sprawling 27.3-acre grounds by June 5, a timeline that has generated significant concern among its members and employees.

Justice Avneesh Jhingan, presiding over the case, opted not to suspend the eviction order, despite the club’s historical significance as one of the capital’s oldest and most exclusive social and sporting venues, frequented by diplomats, bureaucrats, and military personnel. However, the judge did issue summons concerning lawsuits filed by members of the club, setting the stage for a deeper legal examination of the eviction circumstances.

During the proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta addressed the court, clarifying that the club had been formally requested to vacate the premises in a non-confrontational manner. He assured the court that the eviction process would only occur following appropriate notice. This assurance comes amidst rising tensions and public interest regarding the future of the Gymkhana Club, which is situated adjacent to the Prime Minister’s residence and other high-security governmental installations.

The eviction order stems from a directive issued by the Land and Development Office, which operates under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The government has expressed that the land is needed for enhancing defense infrastructure, governance facilities, and other vital public security purposes, explaining that the original lease was granted specifically for the maintenance of a social and sporting establishment.

This development raises critical questions about the balance between urban development and the preservation of historical institutions in Delhi. The Gymkhana Club’s long-standing presence has made it an integral part of Delhi’s elite social fabric, and its potential closure would mark a significant cultural shift in the city’s landscape. As the legal battle unfolds, many are watching closely to see how it will impact both the club’s future and the broader implications for similar institutions across the nation.
