ED Conducts Raids on Former Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s Homes in Money Laundering Probe

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a significant operation targeting former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as part of a money laundering investigation. On Wednesday, officials executed searches at multiple locations, including Vijayan’s residences in Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram. This action follows claims regarding irregular financial activities associated with a company linked to Vijayan’s family.

The focus of the investigation centers around Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL), a private firm allegedly involved in questionable transactions amounting to approximately Rs 1.72 crore. It is reported that the payments were made to Exalogic Solutions, an information technology firm previously run by Vijayan’s daughter, T Veena, during the period from 2017 to 2021. The ED is scrutinizing the legitimacy of these payments, which were made without clear documentation of any services provided in return, raising suspicions about potential money laundering.

In a coordinated effort, the ED’s operation extended to around 12 locations across the state, including the homes of Vijayan’s daughter and son-in-law, former minister PA Muhammad Riyas, in Kozhikode. Moreover, the agency also targeted offices associated with high-ranking officials of CMRL. The controversy surrounding this case first emerged earlier this year when the income tax department conducted searches at CMRL’s premises, coincidentally while Vijayan was still serving as the chief minister of Kerala.

The allegations against Vijayan and his family have brought significant media attention and public scrutiny, especially given his prominent position in Kerala politics. Critics argue that this investigation reflects broader concerns about transparency and accountability within the state government. As the ED continues its investigation, the political ramifications for Vijayan and his party, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), could be substantial.

Vijayan, a key figure in Kerala’s political landscape, has maintained that he is innocent of any wrongdoing and has expressed confidence that the truth will ultimately prevail. The unfolding developments in this case are likely to generate discussions about governance, the intersections of politics and business, and the importance of ethical conduct in public service.
