West Bengal voters were thrown into a state of confusion and panic when the Election Commission’s website mistakenly indicated that all of them were ‘under adjudication’ as part of the special intensive revision process of the electoral rolls. This alarming error was brought to light by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, who criticized the poll panel for its apparent technical failures.
Moitra took to social media to express her concern, questioning how a system funded by taxpayers could be so fraught with errors and inconsistencies. She pointed out that while the glitch was eventually rectified, it exposed serious flaws in the software employed by the Election Commission, which is responsible for managing electoral processes across the country. “What concrete steps has the Election Commission taken to fix these recurring issues?” Moitra asked, suggesting that the commission seems more focused on facilitating the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) agenda rather than addressing critical issues that impact millions of voters.
This incident unfolded against the backdrop of West Bengal’s electoral landscape, where the special intensive revision of electoral rolls is currently underway. The Election Commission had published the final electoral roll for the state on February 28, revealing that over 61 lakh voters had been excluded from it. The ongoing process, however, has left around 60 lakh cases of ‘doubtful and pending’ voters languishing ‘under adjudication’ due to objections raised regarding their removals from the draft rolls published in December.
With the electoral rolls being a crucial aspect of participatory democracy, the implications of such technical failures are significant. West Bengal is one of 12 states and Union Territories undergoing this special revision process, making the accuracy of the electoral rolls even more critical in light of upcoming elections. The concerns raised by TMC underscore the necessity for a robust, error-free electoral management system that can inspire confidence in voters.
As the political landscape in West Bengal continues to evolve, the Election Commission must reassess its technological infrastructure and ensure that such incidents do not recur. The integrity of the electoral process is paramount, and the onus lies on the authorities to guarantee that all eligible citizens can exercise their right to vote without fear or confusion.
