Four Arrested in Manipur for Alleged Kidnapping of Naga Men Amid Ongoing Ethnic Tensions

In a significant development, four individuals were apprehended by the police in Manipur on Monday for their alleged role in the kidnapping of six Naga men in the Kangpokpi district. The arrests were made in an area situated between P Molding and Leilon Veiphei. The detained suspects include Thangkhomang Khongsai, 51, Seikholet Khongsai, 40, Lunminthang Dimngel, 27, and Kamgoulal Khongsai, 30, all of whom are believed to be active members of armed volunteer groups in the region.

The Manipur Police indicated that these men are considered to be involved in various anti-social activities, including extortion and criminal intimidation, as well as possessing illegal arms and ammunition. The term “village volunteers” has gained prominence in Manipur since the onset of ethnic clashes in May 2023, referring to armed civilian groups tasked with protecting their villages amidst escalating violence.

This operation, which led to the arrests, was a collaborative effort involving the state police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Assam Rifles. The police described the situation in Kangpokpi and surrounding areas as volatile, with significant concerns over public safety. There have been reports of mass abductions, highlighting the precarious security landscape in the region.

On May 13, a disturbing incident unfolded in which over 38 individuals from both the Kuki and Naga communities were reportedly taken hostage by armed groups, an act that fueled further outrage and fear in the local populace. Although the state Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam confirmed the abductions, there was considerable confusion regarding the exact number of hostages, as indicated by an anonymous police officer who spoke to The Indian Express.

The abductions occurred in the backdrop of escalating violence, including the tragic killings of three church leaders and several injuries sustained when armed assailants targeted their vehicles. These incidents have exacerbated existing tensions between different ethnic communities in Manipur, prompting calls for urgent intervention and dialogue to restore peace.

As the situation continues to unfold, the local administration is under pressure to address the rampant lawlessness and prevent further incidents. The arrests made on Monday are seen as a step towards stabilizing the region, yet the underlying issues of ethnic strife and community mistrust remain unresolved, leaving many in Manipur anxious about the future.
