Kerala Braces for Southwest Monsoon Arrival on June 4, IMD Confirms

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon is anticipated to make its entry into Kerala around June 4, marking a crucial period for the state’s agricultural landscape and water resources. This revelation comes after the IMD initially forecasted an earlier onset by May 26, only to revise its predictions in light of changing weather conditions.

According to the latest updates from the IMD, the atmospheric conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for the monsoon’s advance into various regions, including parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, the Lakshadweep Islands, and several areas across Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Additionally, the agency noted that other parts of the Bay of Bengal region are also expected to experience the monsoon’s arrival within the same timeframe.

Weather experts expect that Kerala could witness significant rainfall, with predictions suggesting isolated instances of heavy to very heavy showers ranging between 7 to 20 centimeters over the next week. Parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are also likely to be affected, prompting authorities to remain vigilant as the monsoon approaches.

This year’s monsoon season has been closely watched, especially given the IMD’s earlier forecasts indicating a below-normal rainfall of 92% for the duration. This declaration marks the first instance in over a decade of such a prediction, stirring concerns among farmers and water resource managers alike. On May 29, the IMD adjusted its forecast further, estimating rainfall to be around 90% of the normal levels.

Historically, Kerala has experienced varying onset dates for the monsoon, with 2025 recording the earliest arrival on May 24 since 2009. The monsoon is not just a weather phenomenon for this southern state; it is a lifeline for agriculture, influencing crop cycles and the livelihoods of millions. As anticipation builds for the official commencement of the monsoon, the region is bracing itself, hoping for a balanced rainfall that can rejuvenate the land while ensuring the safety of its residents against potential flooding.
