Kesar Mango Takes Center Stage as India Expands its Reach in the US Market

When former US President George W. Bush savored an Alphonso mango during his visit to New Delhi in 2006, he famously remarked to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, “This is a hell of a fruit.” This moment marked a significant turning point in the journey of Indian mangoes, paving the way for the eventual lifting of the US ban on Indian mango imports in 2007, which allowed irradiated mangoes to enter the American market. Fast forward nearly two decades, and Indian mangoes are now making a notable entry into US retail channels, including major stores such as Costco. The latest buzz in the market suggests a shift in promotional focus from the beloved Alphonso mango to the Kesar variety, igniting consumer interest across the Atlantic.

The Kesar mango, often hailed for its sweet and distinct flavor, is beginning to overshadow the Alphonso in terms of marketing strategy in the US. With headlines in esteemed publications like The Wall Street Journal proclaiming, “Americans Will Do Anything to Get Indian Mangoes,” it is evident that the demand for these tropical delights is soaring. Consumers are increasingly willing to go to great lengths to secure a taste of India’s mango heritage, showcasing the growing allure of the Kesar variety.

India is the world’s largest producer of mangoes, accounting for about 40% of global production, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Traditionally, the primary export markets for Indian mangoes have been the Middle East, UK, and Gulf countries, with the US receiving around 4,000 tonnes of these fruits annually. This expanding presence in the US market signifies not just a triumph for Indian agriculture but also a cultural bridge that connects Indian flavors with American palates.

Interestingly, the shift from Alphonso to Kesar mangoes may be a strategic decision, influenced by various factors, including availability and consumer preferences. While the Alphonso mango is often referred to as the “king of mangoes,” the Kesar, famed for its vibrant orange hue, creamy texture, and aromatic sweetness, has captured the attention of food enthusiasts and chefs alike. The Kesar’s robust flavor profile makes it versatile for culinary uses, from desserts to savory dishes, enhancing its appeal to a broader audience.

As the mango season unfolds, the excitement surrounding Indian mangoes in the US is palpable. The growing interest in Kesar mangoes reflects a broader trend towards exploring international flavors and cuisines, especially as American consumers become more adventurous in their culinary choices. This surge in popularity could pave the way for more diverse offerings from India, showcasing not just mangoes but a wide range of agricultural products. With the potential for increased exports and a strengthened cultural exchange, the future looks bright for India’s mango industry in the global arena.
