The Madhya Pradesh High Court made a significant ruling on Wednesday, overturning the anticipatory bail previously granted to Giribala Singh, a retired judge, in connection with a harrowing dowry death case involving her daughter-in-law. This case has elicited substantial public interest due to its tragic circumstances and the serious allegations surrounding it.
Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old model and actress hailing from Noida, was discovered dead under mysterious circumstances at her marital residence in the Katara Hills locality of Bhopal on May 12. While her husband’s family contended that she took her own life, Twisha’s own family has vehemently alleged that she was subjected to constant dowry harassment, ultimately leading to her untimely demise.
Following Twisha’s death, her husband, Samrath Singh, who had been evading authorities for over a week, eventually surrendered to the court in Jabalpur on May 22. This surrender came after he withdrew a petition for anticipatory bail that he had filed in the High Court, with the Bhopal Police subsequently arresting him on charges stemming from the case.
Initially, Giribala Singh received anticipatory bail from a trial court on May 15, which was justified on the basis that the allegations were directed primarily at her son. However, both the state government and Twisha Sharma’s family contested this decision, seeking justice for the alleged abuses suffered by their daughter.
On Wednesday, Justice Devnarayan Mishra of the Madhya Pradesh High Court underscored the seriousness of the allegations against Giribala Singh. He referenced WhatsApp messages purportedly sent by Twisha to her family before her death, which contained serious accusations against her mother-in-law, further complicating the narrative presented by the husband’s family. Additionally, the post-mortem examination revealed that Twisha had suffered multiple injuries prior to her death, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding her passing.
This case has not only drawn attention to the issue of dowry-related violence in India but also highlighted the ongoing struggles that many women face in abusive marital situations.
