Manipur Police Detain Four Individuals Linked to Naga Men Abduction

In a significant development in Manipur, police have arrested four individuals believed to be connected to the abduction of six Naga men in the Kangpokpi district on May 13. The arrests took place on Monday in a joint operation involving the state police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Assam Rifles, targeting areas between P Molding and Leilon Veiphei.

The suspects, identified as 51-year-old Thangkhomang Khongsai, 40-year-old Seikholet Khongsai, 27-year-old Lunminthang Dimngel, and 30-year-old Kamgoulal Khongsai, are alleged to be active members of armed village volunteer groups in the region. These groups have emerged following a series of ethnic clashes that erupted in Manipur in May 2023, whereby civilians were mobilized to protect their villages. The police have raised concerns that these individuals might be implicated in various anti-social activities, including extortion, intimidation, and illegal possession of firearms.

The backdrop of this incident lies in a tense environment in Manipur resulting from ongoing ethnic strife, primarily between the Kuki and Naga communities. The abduction incident is part of a broader narrative where more than 38 individuals from both communities were reportedly taken hostage by armed factions in the Kangpokpi and Senapati districts, as confirmed by state Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam. However, the exact number of hostages had remained unclear at the time, highlighting the chaotic situation that has prevailed in the area.

This wave of violence spiraled following the tragic killings of three church leaders, alongside injuries sustained by five others in attacks on their vehicles. Such incidents have not only heightened tensions but also raised urgent calls for peace and stability in a state grappling with deep-seated ethnic divisions.

As the investigation unfolds, the authorities are keen on dismantling the networks that perpetuate such violence in Manipur. The police have vowed to intensify their crackdown on armed groups that threaten the safety of local residents, as the plight of the abducted individuals remains a pressing concern. In a region where community ties are of utmost importance, the security forces’ recent actions may bring a glimmer of hope to residents yearning for normalcy and security.
