Maratha Quota Activist Manoj Jarange-Patil Halts Hunger Strike After Productive Dialogue with Maharashtra Government
In a significant development for the Maratha community, activist Manoj Jarange-Patil concluded his indefinite hunger strike on Sunday after fruitful discussions with officials from the Maharashtra government. The dialogue focused on the community’s long-standing demands, particularly concerning reservations in education and government jobs, which have sparked widespread protests across the state.
Jarange-Patil initiated his hunger strike around 10 AM on Saturday in Jalna district, a move that highlighted the urgent need for action on the Maratha reservation issue. After approximately 15 hours of fasting, he received assurances from government representatives, leading him to call off his protest. The discussions were attended by prominent figures, including Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, who leads the Maratha Reservation Cabinet Sub-Committee, and Bharatiya Janata Party MLC Prasad Lad.
Following the resolution of his protest, Jarange-Patil addressed his supporters, sharing the government’s commitment to expedite the issuance of Kunbi caste certificates, which are essential for securing reservations. He revealed that about 58 lakh records had already been identified for this purpose. The government plans to display these records at gram panchayat offices, with the divisional commissioner’s office overseeing the certificate issuance process.
However, the activist did not shy away from emphasizing the need for further action. He issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding the withdrawal of police cases filed against Maratha protesters within a month. This reflects the community’s frustration over ongoing legal actions and the need for acknowledgment of their rights and demands.
The Maratha community’s quest for reservations has gained significant momentum in recent years, particularly in 2023, as protests led by Jarange-Patil have reignited discussions around this contentious issue. The movement has not been without its challenges, as it has seen violence, tragic incidents of suicide, and the resignation of several legislators in response to the escalating unrest.
As Jarange-Patil ends his hunger strike and receives medical attention in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the future of the Maratha reservation movement hangs in the balance. The community’s long-standing demands must now translate into concrete policy actions, ensuring justice and equity for the Marathas in Maharashtra.
