Hyderabad: Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has launched a Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) cancer testing facility, which officials say is the first such facility in Telangana’s government healthcare sector. The facility is intended to support advanced cancer diagnosis and personalized treatment planning through molecular and genetic testing.
According to NIMS officials, the NGS laboratory will help doctors analyze genetic mutations and molecular characteristics of tumors, enabling more detailed assessment of cancer cases. The technology can examine multiple genetic markers simultaneously and may assist physicians in selecting treatment options based on a patient’s specific medical condition.
Medical experts note that NGS technology is increasingly being used in oncology to identify cancer-related mutations, genetic abnormalities, biomarkers, and molecular targets that may influence treatment decisions.
Officials stated that the facility is expected to reduce dependence on external testing centers and may improve access to advanced diagnostic services for patients seeking treatment at government hospitals.
The institute also announced that eligible patients may receive testing support through government healthcare provisions, subject to applicable guidelines and eligibility criteria.
NIMS authorities said the laboratory is expected to contribute to clinical research, medical education, and the expansion of molecular diagnostic services within the state’s healthcare system.
Healthcare professionals believe that advanced genomic testing can support precision medicine approaches, which focus on tailoring treatment strategies based on the genetic and molecular characteristics of individual patients.
The facility is expected to begin serving patients through the institute’s oncology and diagnostic departments in accordance with established medical protocols.
