Political Turmoil in Tamil Nadu: Four AIADMK MLAs Resign Amid Internal Strife

In a significant political shake-up in Tamil Nadu, four MLAs from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) have resigned from the state Assembly within just two days. This wave of resignations comes on the heels of three MLAs switching their allegiance to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister Vijay, marking a crucial moment in the state’s political landscape.

The mass resignation began on Monday when three MLAs—Maragatham Kumaravel from Madurantakam, Sathyabama P from Dharapuram, and Jayakumar S from Perundurai—submitted their resignations. These were promptly accepted by the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly, adding fuel to the ongoing political drama. Shortly after their resignations, the trio met with Aadhav Arjuna, the Public Works Department Minister, at the Secretariat, solidifying their move to align with the ruling party.

On Tuesday, the wave of resignations continued with Esakki Subaya, the MLA from Ambasamudram, also resigning. His decision has raised eyebrows, particularly given that disqualification proceedings against the MLAs are still in motion. Subaya stated that his choice was made with the welfare of his constituents in mind, and he promised to provide a more comprehensive explanation in the near future. Meanwhile, the other three MLAs echoed similar sentiments, claiming their resignations were not motivated by personal gain but were instead in the best interests of their respective constituencies.

This sudden exodus from the AIADMK has reduced the party’s strength in the Assembly to 43 members, compounding the challenges faced by the party amidst an internal division. The resigning MLAs are affiliated with a faction led by former ministers CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani, while another faction is led by O. Panneerselvam, highlighting the ongoing rifts within the party. Such internal conflicts have become increasingly evident, raising questions about the party’s stability and future in Tamil Nadu’s political arena.

The implications of these resignations could be far-reaching as the political climate in Tamil Nadu continues to evolve. With the Assembly’s dynamics shifting, the ruling party, now reinforced by the new members, might gain a more robust footing to implement its agenda. Analysts are closely watching how this development will influence not only the AIADMK but also the overall political landscape in the state as upcoming elections approach.
