Saket Building Collapse: Owner Arrested as Investigation Unfolds After Tragic Loss of Six Lives

In a tragic incident that shook the Saket area of Delhi, the local police arrested the owner of a multi-storey building that collapsed on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of six individuals and leaving eight others injured. The collapse took place near the Saket metro station in the Saidulajab locality, where the ill-fated structure was reportedly housing a coaching center along with cafes and offices.

During the time of the incident, construction work was being carried out on the upper floors of the building. Most of the casualties were students pursuing medical and engineering courses, who were enjoying their meals at a temporary canteen located on an adjacent plot when debris from the falling structure struck them. Among the deceased were five students along with the canteen owner, highlighting the devastating impact of this incident on the community.

Authorities have identified the building’s owner as 71-year-old Karambir Sejwal, who had gone missing immediately following the collapse. He was apprehended at his farmhouse in Vasant Kunj, Delhi, on Monday. Sejwal is known to own several rental properties in the Saidulajab area, raising questions about the safety and legality of the buildings he manages. Reports indicate that two additional floors were being constructed on the property despite strict local regulations that allow a maximum of ground plus three stories in the area.

The investigation is now delving into the circumstances surrounding the building’s construction, with police also searching for the contractor and builder responsible for the ongoing work. Raids are being conducted across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the National Capital Region as part of this inquiry, reflecting the seriousness with which authorities are approaching the case.

This tragic event not only brings to light the ongoing issues of building safety in India but also raises concerns about the enforcement of regulatory laws. As the investigation progresses, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by illegal constructions, particularly in densely populated urban areas. With many lives forever altered due to this incident, the community and authorities alike are now calling for stricter adherence to building codes to prevent such catastrophes in the future.
