Sonny Rollins: The Jazz Legend's Spiritual Journey in Mumbai's Ashrams

In 1968, an unexpected chapter unfolded in the life of the legendary jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, as he embarked on a spiritual journey to Mumbai. Among the bustling streets and vibrant culture of the city, Rollins discovered the serenity of ashrams, particularly one situated in the scenic Powai area. This was a time when jazz was pulsating through the veins of Bombay, captivating the hearts of many, including two passionate students from St Xavier’s College: Nirajan Jhaveri and Jehangir Dalal.

Jhaveri and Dalal, fervent fans of jazz music, were determined to track down Rollins, rumored to be studying yoga in the city. Their quest led them to explore various religious retreats, showcasing their dedication to both the music they loved and the spiritual journey of an artist they admired. Their escapades through the city in search of the saxophone colossus are a testament to how jazz transcended borders and connected people from diverse backgrounds.

Eventually, their search brought them to the ashram managed by the esteemed Swami Chinmayananda in Powai. It was here that they finally encountered Rollins, who had taken a hiatus from his illustrious career to delve into the practices of yoga and self-discovery. The saxophonist himself recounts how he stumbled upon the ashram almost by chance, connecting his interests in metaphysics and spirituality to his quest for meaning in life.

Rollins, who had been exploring yoga since the 1950s, sought a deeper understanding of the world and himself. In an interview with The Victoria Advocate in 2010, he shared, “I had been interested in metaphysical organisations and things like Buddhism, yoga, and Sufism. I felt like I needed to get more into self-improvement and the greater purposes and meaning of life.” This pursuit of self-awareness and inner peace resonated deeply with his passion for music, as both realms require introspection and a connection to something greater than oneself.

His time in Mumbai not only enriched his spiritual journey but also offered a unique glimpse into the cultural fabric of India during a transformative era. The encounter between a jazz icon and the philosophical teachings of an Indian ashram exemplifies the universal quest for enlightenment, bridging the gap between art and spirituality. For many jazz enthusiasts and admirers of Rollins, this episode remains a fascinating chapter in the annals of music history, showcasing how the saxophonist’s love for yoga and exploration of the self intertwined seamlessly with his musical genius.
