Supreme Court Grants Vinesh Phogat Entry to Asian Games Selection Trials Amid Controversy

In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India has permitted wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games, which are set to take place this Saturday. This decision comes after a legal battle that highlighted crucial issues regarding athlete rights and maternity leave within the sporting community.

The Supreme Court’s bench, comprising Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, rejected a plea from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) that sought to challenge a prior order from the Delhi High Court. The High Court, on May 22, had provided Phogat with interim relief, stating that the WFI’s revised selection criteria were unjust and exclusionary. The federation’s new rules had barred Phogat from participating in the trials, as she had missed certain designated tournaments while on maternity leave after giving birth to her child in July 2025.

Vinesh Phogat, a prominent figure in Indian wrestling known for her accolades and achievements on international platforms, had initiated her challenge against the federation’s policies in light of her recent maternity leave. The High Court had emphasized that no athlete, especially a female athlete, should face disadvantages for taking time off to care for a child. The court’s decision underscored the necessity for policies that support women athletes returning to their sport after maternity.

During the Supreme Court hearing, while the judges declined to overturn the High Court’s order, they did express skepticism regarding some of the reasoning involved in granting relief to Phogat. Justice Narasimha remarked on the wrestler’s sabbatical, which she had taken in December 2024, and her communication with the WFI about her intentions to return to competition. This aspect reflects a broader conversation about the responsibilities of sports federations in accommodating athletes’ personal circumstances.

Phogat’s case has ignited discussions about maternity leave in sports, raising awareness about the challenges faced by female athletes in balancing their personal and professional lives. The ruling serves as a beacon of hope for many women in sports who have faced similar issues, reinforcing that maternity should not be a barrier but a supported decision.

The upcoming Asian Games selection trials are crucial for Vinesh Phogat as she seeks to reclaim her position among the elite wrestlers of the nation. With the Supreme Court’s backing, she now has the opportunity to compete and demonstrate her prowess on the mat once again. This development not only affects Phogat but also sets a precedent for sports policies in India, potentially leading to reforms that champion inclusivity and equality for all athletes.
