Suvendu Adhikari Expands West Bengal Cabinet with 35 New Ministers from BJP

In a significant move, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expanded his Cabinet for the first time on Monday, welcoming 35 BJP MLAs as ministers just three weeks after the party’s landmark victory in the state Assembly elections. The oath-taking ceremony took place at Lok Bhavan in Kolkata, presided over by Governor RN Ravi, marking a pivotal moment in the BJP’s governance journey in West Bengal.

This Cabinet expansion boosts the Council of Ministers from a mere six to a total of 41 members, bringing it closer to the permissible limit of 44 in the 294-member Assembly. The new inductees include a diverse mix of political backgrounds, with 13 elevated to the rank of Cabinet ministers, three appointed as ministers of state with independent charge, and 19 serving as regular ministers of state.

Among the notable figures assuming the position of Cabinet ministers are former Trinamool Congress stalwarts such as Arjun Singh and Tapas Roy, alongside journalist-turned-politicians Swapan Dasgupta and Jagannath Chattopadhyay. The expanded Cabinet also features several prominent names like Shankar Ghosh, Saradwat Mukherjee, Deepak Burman, and Gouri Shankar Ghosh, reflecting a blend of experience and fresh perspectives in governance.

Just 27 days prior to this expansion, Adhikari, along with five other ministers, had taken their oaths following the BJP’s success in the Assembly polls, a victory that disrupted the long-standing dominance of the Trinamool Congress in the state. The recent Cabinet reshuffle aims to establish a more robust governance framework and address the aspirations of the electorate who have placed their confidence in the BJP for a transformative administration.

The induction of these ministers is seen not only as a strategic move to enhance the operational dynamics of the government but also to ensure representation from various regions and communities within West Bengal. With this expansion, the BJP hopes to consolidate its governance structure and implement policies aimed at development and welfare, addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by the state.
