TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee Attacked in Sonarpur Amid Political Tensions

In a shocking incident that underscores the escalating political tensions in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee was assaulted by a mob during his visit to Sonarpur on Saturday. The MP had arrived in the area to express his condolences to the family of Sanju Karmakar, a TMC worker who was reportedly killed amid post-election violence.

As Banerjee approached Karmakar’s residence, he was met with hostility from a group that hurled stones and eggs at him while chanting slogans accusing him of being a “thief.” Videos circulating on social media captured the chaotic scene, showing the TMC leader donning a helmet as he faced the mob. In response to the attack, the TMC has accused members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the violence.

Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media, expressing her outrage at the incident and condemning the BJP, stating, “Rulers became killers – shame on you BJP.” Her remarks highlight the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition in the state, particularly in the wake of contentious elections that have left several party workers at risk.

Abhishek Banerjee, visibly shaken yet defiant, remarked that the attackers seemed intent on harming him. He was quoted saying, “Let them kill me. Let my dead body be recovered from here. But I won’t quit and abandon Karmakar’s parents.” His statement reflects the deep-seated political hostility that has pervaded the region and the palpable fear experienced by political workers on the ground.

After over an hour and a half spent with the grieving family, Banerjee was ultimately escorted away by personnel from central forces and local police, as tensions continued to mount in the area. He further criticized the lack of adequate police presence during the incident, suggesting that the situation was not adequately managed by the authorities. This incident raises serious questions about the safety of political figures and the broader implications for democracy in West Bengal.

The Sonarpur attack on Abhishek Banerjee serves as a grim reminder of the hostile political climate in the state, where violence and intimidation have become distressingly common in the wake of elections. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the incident further complicates the relationship between the TMC and the BJP, indicating a potentially volatile future ahead for West Bengal politics.
