TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee Attacked in Sonarpur: Five Arrested Amid Rising Political Tensions

In a shocking incident that has intensified the ongoing political strife in West Bengal, five individuals were apprehended and two others detained for their alleged involvement in the assault on Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee. This incident occurred in Sonarpur, as confirmed by local police on Sunday. The attack, which prompted immediate action, has raised concerns over safety and political rivalry in the region.

According to reports, the police launched a suo motu case following the assault on Banerjee, who is also the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Specialized teams were dispatched overnight to conduct raids across different parts of Sonarpur, leading to the identification of seven suspects. Their identities were established through security camera footage and media clips that captured the chaos during the attack, which happened on Saturday.

During his visit to Sonarpur, Banerjee was confronted by a hostile crowd while paying respects to the family of a slain party worker, who was reportedly a victim of post-election violence. Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of turmoil, with protestors hurling eggs and stones at Banerjee, chanting slogans accusing him of corruption. The TMC leader, who was wearing a helmet for protection, sustained minor injuries and was promptly taken to two private hospitals for treatment. After medical evaluation, doctors reported that he had suffered bruising but was discharged later that night.

The TMC has claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) orchestrated the attack, viewing it as an attempt to undermine the ruling party’s influence in the state. In contrast, the BJP has firmly denied any involvement, suggesting instead that the incident was a manifestation of public frustration against the TMC government. This clash further underscores the deepening divisions between the two major political parties in West Bengal.

As the political environment in West Bengal grows increasingly volatile, the implications of such attacks can be far-reaching, influencing public sentiment and voter behavior ahead of upcoming elections. The incident involving Banerjee is a grim reminder of the lengths to which political rivalry can escalate, and it raises urgent questions about the safety of public figures and their supporters in a highly charged political landscape.
