Tragedy Strikes as BEd Aspirants Fall into Open Sewage Drain in Kanpur

In a shocking incident in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, at least 20 students preparing for the Bachelor of Education (BEd) Joint Entrance Examination found themselves in a precarious situation when a slab covering a sewage drain collapsed. This unfortunate event took place on Sunday morning near HN Mishra PG College in MacRobertganj, leaving several candidates injured and many more shaken.

The mishap occurred as the aspiring candidates gathered at a local shop to make photocopies of essential documents required for their examination. According to Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal, the slab’s sudden collapse was unexpected, causing chaos among the students who were already under stress preparing for their exams. Eyewitnesses reported that the situation escalated when students were informed at the last moment that copies of their Aadhaar cards were mandatory, leading to a frantic rush at nearby shops.

As the slab gave way, students and parents were engulfed, resulting in four individuals suffering minor injuries. Many others emerged from the ordeal with soiled clothing and damaged materials, including admit cards and personal belongings. One parent accompanying the students also sustained injuries during the incident, amplifying the distress surrounding an already stressful day.

Following the incident, the police were quick to respond, ensuring that all injured were attended to promptly. Thankfully, there were no fatalities reported, but the event has raised serious concerns about safety measures in the vicinity of examination centers.

Authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident while also highlighting the necessity for better infrastructure around examination venues. As students gear up for such significant milestones in their academic careers, ensuring their safety must take precedence over all else. The examination boards are urged to take immediate steps to prevent such unfortunate occurrences in the future.
