US Nonprofits Rally Against Authoritarianism: A Response to Trump's Governance Model

In recent years, the concept of an ‘authoritarian playbook’ has sparked discussions among social scientists and political commentators. While this playbook is not a tangible document, it encapsulates the common strategies used by leaders—both wannabe and established—to consolidate their grip on power. Over the past two decades, populist figures from various nations, including Russia and Venezuela, have managed to undermine democratic institutions, often exploiting the very frameworks that were designed to uphold them.

One of the primary challenges faced by proponents of democracy is the apparent lack of a coherent defensive strategy to counteract the aggressive tactics employed by authoritarian regimes. Many organizations dedicated to the support of democratic values, including nonprofits and media outlets, have found themselves ill-equipped to respond effectively. Their reactions tend to be fragmented and lack the coordinated strength necessary to stand against systemic threats.

Within this context, I have embarked on a research project examining how membership in nonprofits influences individuals’ democratic beliefs and how these organizations function in less-than-democratic environments. The increasing indications of autocratic tendencies within the US government have prompted a closer look at how American nonprofits are grappling with significant challenges, particularly as they face unprecedented scrutiny and constraints on their operations.

Under the Trump administration, these nonprofits have been the target of budget cuts amounting to billions of dollars, severely impacting their ability to provide essential services such as healthcare, childcare, and food assistance for the underprivileged. Additionally, the administration’s decision to reduce financial support for development aid to poorer nations has sent ripples of concern through the nonprofit sector.

Despite the pressure, many of these organizations have demonstrated remarkable resilience. They have engaged in grassroots mobilization efforts, fostered community ties, and advocated fiercely for their cause, even in the face of overwhelming odds. This proactive stance is not only vital for their survival but also serves as a model for other democratic institutions seeking to navigate an increasingly hostile political environment.

The lessons learned from the experiences of US nonprofits are particularly relevant in the Indian context, where civil society organizations face their own set of challenges. As authoritarian tendencies become more pronounced globally, the need for a robust civil society capable of advocating for democratic values becomes ever more pressing. The resilience shown by US nonprofits can inspire similar movements in India, emphasizing the importance of unity and strategic action in the face of adversity.
