Violence Erupts as ED Raids Former Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan's Residence

In a dramatic turn of events in Thiruvananthapuram, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials faced aggression from alleged Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) supporters after a lengthy raid at the residence of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The incident unfolded on Wednesday, following a seven-hour search conducted as part of an ongoing investigation into money laundering activities linked to Vijayan and his family.

The ED’s investigation centers on claims that Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL), a private mining company, disbursed approximately Rs 1.7 crore to Exalogic Solutions, an IT firm owned by Vijayan’s daughter, T Veena, between 2017 and 2021. This transaction has raised eyebrows due to the absence of concrete evidence indicating any services were rendered in exchange for the payments. CMRL, in which the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation holds a 13.4% stake, is said to have made these payments under questionable circumstances.

On the day of the raid, the ED also targeted several other locations across Kerala, including the residences of Vijayan’s family members and former minister PA Muhammad Riyas, who is married to Veena. These searches encompassed a total of 12 sites, aimed at uncovering further evidence related to the allegations against the former Chief Minister and his kin.

As the ED officials concluded their operation and attempted to leave Vijayan’s residence, they were reportedly confronted by a mob of CPI(M) workers. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene, with vehicles belonging to the ED being vandalized and officials verbally and physically assaulted. This violence underscores the heightened tensions surrounding the investigation and the political ramifications it carries.

CPI(M) has maintained a staunch defense of Vijayan, with party members claiming that the ED’s actions are politically motivated, aimed at maligning the party’s leadership. The ongoing scrutiny of Vijayan’s financial dealings has sparked a fierce debate in Kerala, where political allegiances often intertwine with matters of public trust and governance.

The ED’s focus on Vijayan comes amid broader concerns regarding corruption and accountability within the political landscape of Kerala. As the investigation continues, the repercussions for the former Chief Minister and his party could be profound, influencing Kerala’s political narrative in the coming months.
