A Central or State University Felt Necessary in Sribhumi, Assam

Students Continue to Depend on Silchar for Higher Education

The establishment of a Central or State University in Sribhumi (Karimganj) district, Assam is increasingly being felt as a necessity. At present, Barak Valley has two major universities — Assam University and Gurucharan College University — both located in Cachar district at Silchar. Consequently, students from Karimganj and Hailakandi districts must travel considerable distances to access higher education.

For many students, daily travel to Silchar is both time-consuming and financially challenging. Limited hostel facilities further add to the burden, compelling several students to seek private accommodation at higher costs. Those from rural and economically weaker backgrounds are particularly affected, and in some cases, deserving students are unable to pursue higher studies due to these constraints.

Education observers note that establishing a university in Sribhumi district would significantly benefit not only Karimganj but also Hailakandi and nearby areas. It would enhance the academic infrastructure of the region, encourage research and innovation, and open up new avenues for local employment.

There is a growing view that the concerned authorities may consider the matter as an important issue to ensure balanced and inclusive development of higher education across all districts of Barak Valley.
