A Refugee’s Journey: Bhushan’s Quest for Identity in the Streets of Calcutta

In the bustling streets of Calcutta, the tale of Bhushan, a refugee from East Bengal, unfolds like a poignant memory etched in the past. His journey began in 1964, a year that marked his departure from a once cherished home – a haveli that held the essence of his childhood and the warmth of family. Leaving with his mother, Bhushan carried the weight of nostalgia, knowing that he would never return to the familiar grounds that once cradled his dreams.

After fleeing the turmoil that engulfed his homeland, Bhushan found himself in the cramped and rented rooms of Dhaka Patty in central-northern Calcutta, alongside his brothers. However, the solace he sought quickly morphed into discomfort. The shadows of suspicion loomed large as his brothers accused him of misappropriating a valuable family heirloom – a heavy silver plate that was meant to symbolize their heritage. The accusation struck hard, especially given the chaos of their escape from Kushtia train station, where thousands were jostling for safety, making their memories a hazy blur.

In the frenzy of travel, Bhushan grappled with the uncertainty of whether the silver plate had slipped from his grasp amidst the tumult or if it had been covertly taken by a border official during the chaos. The next day, driven by desperation, he returned to Sealdah railway station, retracing his steps in hopes of recovering the lost piece of his past. However, the plate had vanished as if it were never there, leaving Bhushan in a state of despair.

As Bhushan reflected on the situation, he sensed his brother’s turmoil. The silence that enveloped them was heavy with unspoken thoughts, primarily revolving around the lost heirloom. But for Bhushan, the issue transcended the material value of the silver plate; it represented a deeper longing for connection to his roots and identity – something that now felt increasingly fragile in the face of displacement.

Bhushan’s story is not merely a recount of loss but also an exploration of resilience amid adversity. Every street in Calcutta echoes the narratives of countless refugees who have sought sanctuary in the city, each carrying their own tales of heartbreak, hope, and the relentless pursuit of belonging. The urban landscape, vibrant yet melancholic, becomes a backdrop to their struggles and aspirations, painting a vivid picture of life in a post-partition India.
