Assam Assembly Elections: BJP Names Himanta Biswa Sarma as Jalukbari Candidate

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam has unveiled its candidate list for the impending Assembly elections, intensifying the political landscape ahead of the crucial vote. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to contest from the Jalukbari constituency, a seat he has held since 2001, showcasing his long-standing influence and loyalty among local voters.

In a significant political shift, Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently joined the BJP, will represent the party in the Dispur Assembly constituency. Bordoloi’s transition from Congress to BJP highlights the ongoing political realignment in Assam, especially with the Assembly elections drawing near. Sarma’s consistent victories in Jalukbari underscore his stronghold in the region, making his candidacy a focal point of the BJP’s campaign strategy.

The political drama doesn’t end there; Bordoloi’s son, Prateek Bordoloi, who had been nominated by Congress for the Margherita constituency, has withdrawn his candidacy, citing the need to eliminate any confusion regarding his political allegiance. In a letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Prateek expressed his intent to remain affiliated with the party while stepping back from the electoral fray. This move has sparked conversations about loyalty and the dynamics of political affiliations in Assam.

Scheduled for April 9, the Assembly elections will be a pivotal moment for Assam as it features 126 seats, with the counting of votes set for May 9. The BJP, in collaboration with the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, is gearing up for a robust electoral fight. According to strategic seat-sharing agreements, the BJP will contest 89 seats, the Asom Gana Parishad will field candidates in 26 constituencies, while the Bodoland People’s Front will aim for victory in 11.

This election is not only a test of political strength for the incumbent government but also a reflection of the evolving political landscape in Assam. With various parties recalibrating their strategies, the outcome will likely influence the region’s governance and socio-political climate for years to come. As voters prepare to head to the polls, the BJP’s decision to field seasoned leaders like Sarma indicates their intent to capitalize on his established rapport with the electorate.
