Assam Press Bodies Rally Against Attack on Asomiya Pratidin, Highlight Journalist Safety Issues

In a concerning development for press freedom in Assam, various press organizations condemned an attack on the office of the Assamese newspaper, Asomiya Pratidin, which occurred on Friday night in Lakhimpur. This incident has raised alarm bells regarding the safety of journalists in the state, prompting allegations against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for allegedly waging systematic assaults against the media.

The assault on the newspaper’s office took place just a day after the conclusion of the Assembly elections, an event that has heightened tensions in the region. Fortunately, no staff members were harmed during the incident, but the publication described it as a grievous affront to press freedom and the core democratic values that underpin society.

In response to this attack, the Gauhati Press Club organized a protest meeting on Saturday, where journalists and members of the press community came together to voice their outrage. During the gathering, Nitumoni Saikia, the editor of the news channel Pratidin Time, remarked on the current climate for journalists, stating that while past administrations also targeted the media, the level of hostility witnessed today is unprecedented. He noted that the present Chief Minister’s administration has been particularly aggressive, often inquiring about the identities and backgrounds of media owners, which raises serious concerns about press autonomy.

Moreover, Pankaj Nath, the president of the All Assam Journalists’ Association, called on journalists across the state to unite in their response to ongoing attacks on the press. Nath emphasized the importance of solidarity among media professionals to safeguard their rights and ensure a conducive environment for journalism. This collective outcry highlights the pressing need for protective measures for journalists, as instances of violence and intimidation seem to be on the rise.

The attack on Asomiya Pratidin is not an isolated incident but rather a part of a growing trend that endangers journalistic integrity in Assam. With the state’s political landscape becoming increasingly volatile, the safety of journalists is paramount to ensure that they can operate without the threat of violence or coercion. The press plays a crucial role in maintaining democracy, and any attempt to silence it undermines the foundation of a free society.

As the situation evolves, the press community in Assam remains vigilant and is prepared to continue their fight for press freedom, urging both the government and citizens to recognize the invaluable role that journalists play in society. The hope is that such solidarity will lead to a safer environment for media personnel, allowing them to fulfill their duties without fear.
