Bangladesh Alleges Foiled Attempts by India to Push People Across Border

In a significant development, Bangladesh authorities claimed on Thursday that they successfully thwarted ten attempts by India to push individuals into their territory within a 24-hour period. The allegations, reported by Prothom Alo, have yet to elicit a response from the Indian government, raising questions about the ongoing border dynamics between the two nations.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) disclosed that it has ramped up intelligence surveillance and patrolling efforts in border regions to counter any further illegal incursions. In a forceful statement, the BGB asserted, “No individual or group will be allowed to enter Bangladesh illegally through the border.” This statement underscores the country’s commitment to maintaining strict adherence to international border management norms and bilateral agreements.

The backdrop to these tensions can be traced back to the aftermath of a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in April 2025, which has led to heightened scrutiny in several Indian states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Reports have emerged of Bengali-speaking individuals, predominantly Muslims, being detained by Indian authorities and asked to verify their citizenship status. This has resulted in a troubling pattern where several people have been forcibly pushed into Bangladesh after they allegedly failed to provide adequate proof of their Indian nationality.

The situation is further complicated by instances where individuals mistakenly deported to Bangladesh have been subsequently returned to India upon proving their citizenship. Such cases have drawn attention to the processes followed by Indian authorities, particularly concerning compliance with the guidelines set forth by the Union home ministry regarding border management.

As Bangladesh strengthens its border security measures amid these claims, the relationship between the two neighboring countries faces renewed scrutiny. The ongoing issues of citizenship verification and border control continue to be contentious points that could affect diplomatic relations. Observers are keenly watching how both governments will navigate this complex situation moving forward, especially in light of regional security concerns and the humanitarian implications for those caught in the crossfire of these border disputes.
