New Delhi, April 1, IPU Media Update News : The Central Government has initiated revolutionary changes within the Indian Railways system to enhance passenger convenience. The process for train ticket cancellations and refunds has been made more transparent and simplified. These new changes are set to come into effect in a phased manner between April 1st and April 15th.
★ New Rules Implemented for Railway Ticket Cancellations :
According to the regulations in force until now, refund eligibility was calculated based on a window starting only 48 hours prior to the train’s departure. However, under the new reforms, this timeframe has been extended to 72 hours. To streamline the refund process for passengers wishing to cancel their journeys, the Railway Department has categorized the refund mechanism into four distinct time-based slabs.
▸ More than 72 Hours in Advance :
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 72 hours prior to the scheduled journey, the passenger will receive a full refund of the ticket fare, minus only the minimum applicable cancellation charges.
▸ Between 72 and 24 Hours :
If a ticket is cancelled within the window ranging from 72 hours to 24 hours before the train’s departure, 25% of the ticket fare will be deducted, and the remaining 75% will be refunded.
▸ Between 24 and 8 Hours :
If a cancellation is made within the 24-hour to 8-hour window prior to the scheduled journey, only 50% of the ticket fare will be refunded.
▸ If within 8 Hours :
If a ticket is cancelled less than 8 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, or after the train has already departed, no refund will be provided.
★ Boarding Point and Other Conveniences :
Recognizing the needs of passengers, the Railway Department has provided significant relief regarding the modification of boarding points. Effective immediately, passengers can change their boarding station up to just 30 minutes prior to their scheduled journey. This feature proves particularly beneficial for passengers in metropolitan cities such as Hyderabad and Mumbai where multiple railway stations are located within the same city limits.
★ Flexibility in Cancelling Counter Tickets :
Furthermore, in the past, cancelling a ticket purchased at a railway counter required the passenger to visit the train’s originating station. However, passengers can now cancel a counter ticket at any railway station across the country. This update also brings good news for passengers holding such tickets: there is no longer a need to manually apply for a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR). As per the revised regulations, the refund process will now be handled automatically.
