BJD Takes Firm Action: Six MLAs Suspended for Voting Against Party Line in Rajya Sabha Elections

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), under the leadership of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, has announced the suspension of six of its MLAs following their controversial decision to cross-vote in favor of an Independent candidate backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the Rajya Sabha elections on March 16. This drastic move underscores the party’s commitment to maintaining discipline and unity within its ranks.

The suspended MLAs include notable figures such as Chakramani Kanhar from Baliguda, Naba Kishor Mallick from Jayadev, Souvic Biswal of Choudwar-Cuttack, Subasini Jena representing Basta, Ramakanta Bhoi from Tirtol, and Devi Ranjan Tripathy of Banki. Their actions, which included voting against the BJD’s official candidate, Datteswar Hota, have been deemed as acts of disloyalty to the party’s collective decisions.

During the recent Rajya Sabha elections, no single party held a definitive majority for the contested seat. The cross-voting by these six MLAs, alongside two previously suspended legislators, Arvind Mohapatra and Sanatan Mahakud, significantly impacted the election outcome. Their support for Independent candidate Dilip Ray ultimately paved the way for his victory. The BJD and Congress had jointly fielded Hota, a urologist, as their candidate in a bid to consolidate their votes.

In a formal statement regarding the suspensions, BJD President Naveen Patnaik condemned the actions of the MLAs, labeling them as “anti-party activities” that violated the BJD constitution, which emphasizes the importance of adhering to collective decisions made by the party leadership. Prior to the suspensions, the party issued show-cause notices to these legislators, and their responses were thoroughly examined by the BJD’s disciplinary committee before the final decision was reached.

Adding to the tension, BJD Chief Whip Pramila Mallik has indicated that the party plans to seek the disqualification of the suspended MLAs. She stated that the party will formally request the Speaker of the Odisha Assembly to cancel their memberships due to their failure to comply with party directives. This move is likely to send a strong message to other party members about the importance of loyalty and adherence to the party line.

The fallout from this incident not only raises questions about internal party dynamics but also reflects the intense political maneuvering that characterizes the current electoral landscape in Odisha. The BJD, which has a substantial presence in the state, is keen on preserving its integrity and unity as it prepares for future elections. The suspensions serve as a reminder of the high stakes involved in party politics and the potential repercussions for those who deviate from the established party framework.
