Border Security Force Constable Killed in Manipur Amid Rising Ethnic Tensions

In a tragic incident that underscores the ongoing strife in Manipur, a Border Security Force (BSF) constable was shot dead on Friday during a patrol in Mongkot Chepu, situated in the Ukhrul district. The unfortunate victim, identified as Constable Mithun Mandal, was reportedly hit by a bullet fired from an unknown source, according to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.

The circumstances surrounding this shooting remain unclear, with authorities launching an investigation to gather more information. This incident is particularly alarming as it occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions between the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities in the region. These tensions have been building steadily since February, following a violent altercation involving a Tangkhul Naga individual in Litan village.

Earlier this year, a serious incident sparked outrage when a Tangkhul Naga man was reportedly assaulted, prompting his community to seek redress through traditional conflict resolution methods. However, attempts to mediate the situation failed when a critical meeting between the assaulted man’s family and the chief of Litan Sareikhong village was not held. The breakdown in dialogue set off a chain reaction, leading to violent clashes that resulted in the destruction of over 30 homes in the area.

In response to the ethnic violence, local authorities imposed a curfew and suspended internet services in the affected regions to restore order. The recent shooting of Constable Mandal has raised concerns about law and order in an already volatile environment. Community leaders and local residents are calling for immediate action to address the underlying issues fueling this cycle of violence.

This developing story highlights the necessity for more effective conflict resolution mechanisms in Manipur, a state that has seen its share of ethnic strife over the years. As further updates on the shooting and its implications unfold, it is imperative for authorities to work diligently towards fostering peace and stability in this troubled region.
