CBI Appeals to Supreme Court to Revoke Bail for Men Involved in Manipur’s Shocking Assault Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken a decisive step by appealing to the Supreme Court against the bail granted to two individuals implicated in the heinous assault and public humiliation of two Kuki women during the ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur in May 2023. The disturbing incident, which has drawn national outrage, highlights the grave issues of gender-based violence and the urgent need for justice in the region.
The events unfolded on May 3, 2023, amidst escalating tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities. A day after the initial clashes, a shocking video surfaced, depicting the women being paraded naked through the Kangpokpi district by a mob. This footage quickly spread across social media platforms, igniting an uproar and calls for accountability. Notably, one of the women in the video reported that she had been gang-raped, as per police records.
In September 2023, the Gauhati High Court controversially granted bail to the two accused men, who were part of the mob. The court’s decision was based on what it deemed significant delays in the trial process, attributing these delays to shortcomings on the part of the CBI. The case has been mired in controversy, raising questions about the efficiency and effectiveness of the investigative agency in handling such sensitive matters.
The CBI’s recent appeal aims to challenge the bail order, with a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, and Justice N Kotiswar Singh issuing a notice to the two men to respond to the allegations. This action comes at a crucial time as the trial is now underway, with a special court in Guwahati framing criminal charges against a total of six individuals, including the two who were previously granted bail.
The shocking nature of the incident has not only sparked widespread condemnation but also intensified discussions surrounding women’s safety in India, particularly in conflict-affected regions like Manipur. Activists and community leaders are urging for swift justice and systemic reforms to prevent such atrocities from occurring in the future. As the legal proceedings progress, the nation watches closely to see if justice will be served for the victims of this horrific crime.
