Congress Moves Madhya Pradesh MLAs to Karnataka Amidst Fears of BJP Poaching Ahead of Rajya Sabha Elections
In a strategic maneuver ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18, the Congress party has transported a significant number of its MLAs from Madhya Pradesh to Bengaluru, Karnataka. This move, which excludes a handful of senior legislators, aims to safeguard the party’s interests amid growing concerns over possible poaching by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madhya Pradesh.
Umang Singhar, the Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, emphasized the necessity of this action, stating, “Our MLAs will definitely move to the state where the Congress government is in power.” He expressed apprehension regarding the BJP’s attempts to disrupt the party’s unity and electoral prospects. With the Rajya Sabha polls approaching, the Congress is keen to ensure that its legislators remain intact and focused.
Reports indicate that on Tuesday afternoon, 48 Congress MLAs flew from Bhopal to Bengaluru, with additional legislators expected to follow later. This exodus underscores the party’s determination to counter any potential threats from the BJP, which commands a substantial majority in Madhya Pradesh. The 230-member Assembly is set to elect three members to the Rajya Sabha, but with a current effective strength of 229, candidates require 58 first-preference votes for victory.
While the BJP holds 164 seats in the Assembly, the Congress has 63, along with its ally, the Bharat Adivasi Party. The BJP is well-positioned to secure two of the three Rajya Sabha seats but will fall short of the votes needed to win a third, as it requires 116 votes for two seats and will be left with just 48 for the third. The Congress, therefore, sees this election as a critical moment to consolidate its strength and ensure that its representatives are not swayed by the BJP’s overtures.
This political drama in Madhya Pradesh underscores the intense rivalry between the Congress and the BJP, as both parties gear up for this crucial electoral contest. With the stakes high, the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections could significantly influence the political landscape in both Madhya Pradesh and the nation as a whole. As the Congress strives to maintain its unity and focus, all eyes will be on the strategies employed by both parties in the coming days.
