Congress Urges Government to Prioritize National Interest Over Electoral Gains Amid West Asia Tensions

The Indian National Congress has called on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government to align its actions with national interests rather than succumbing to electoral pressures and ideological biases. This statement came during a Congress Working Committee meeting held in New Delhi on Friday, where party leaders expressed their concerns regarding the ongoing conflict in West Asia, emphasizing the need for a cooperative approach in dealing with the situation.

In a resolution passed at the meeting, the Congress party welcomed the recent two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States, deeming it a significant step towards lowering tensions and fostering renewed diplomatic efforts. The party highlighted that the current hostilities not only affect the immediate region but also have far-reaching implications for India, particularly in terms of energy security and its relationships with neighboring countries.

The resolution condemned acts such as targeted assassinations of state leaders and military actions that breach international law, labeling these as “unconscionable crimes” against humanity. The Congress party believes that any meaningful resolution to the conflict must adhere to established international norms, specifically referencing the Geneva Conventions and the United Nations Charter as foundational elements for peace.

Congress leaders pointed out that the ongoing turmoil in West Asia has already strained India’s diplomatic ties and disrupted its energy supplies, urging the government to reassess the implications of the conflict on Indian interests. They criticized the BJP administration for its so-called “myopic and xenophobic” approach to foreign policy, which they argue has distanced India from its traditional allies and undermined its standing in the international community.

As tensions continue to escalate in the West Asia region, the Congress party has reiterated the importance of involving opposition parties in strategic discussions, arguing that a united front is essential for addressing such critical global issues. By prioritizing national interests over political gains, the Congress believes India can better navigate the complex landscape of international relations and safeguard its own security and diplomatic engagements.
