Congress Warns of Diplomatic Setback as Pakistan Emerges as Mediator in US-Iran Talks

The Indian National Congress has expressed deep concern over reports suggesting that Pakistan may be stepping in as a mediator in the ongoing peace negotiations between the United States, Israel, and Iran. This revelation, if proven true, could signify a significant diplomatic setback for India, according to party leaders.

On Monday, a report by the Financial Times highlighted Pakistan’s newfound role as a potential intermediary aiming to facilitate dialogue in the tumultuous West Asian region. The report indicated that Islamabad is positioning itself as a suitable venue for these critical negotiations, raising eyebrows in New Delhi given the complex historical relationship between India and Pakistan.

In response to these developments, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to social media to voice his party’s apprehensions. He remarked, “If these reports are accurate, they represent a severe setback and rebuff to India.” Ramesh’s comments also alluded to the notion that such a shift in diplomatic dynamics is closely tied to what he termed the “self-styled Vishwaguru,” a veiled reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy ambitions.

Highlighting the perceived failures of the Modi administration, Ramesh pointed out that despite India’s military achievements, such as those seen in Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has managed to cultivate a more effective diplomatic narrative. He criticized the current government’s inability to counter Pakistan’s resurgence in the international arena, stating, “Pakistan, which was once in a precarious state politically, socially, economically, and globally, now seems to have regained its footing.”

The Congress leader further noted that the Pakistani establishment appears to have forged a “cosy relationship” with key figures in the Trump administration, intensifying fears within India regarding its geopolitical standing. The implications of Pakistan’s potential role as a mediator could resonate across the region, complicating India’s strategic interests and its vision for peace in neighboring areas.

As tensions in West Asia continue to simmer, the role of external powers like the US and its interactions with countries like Iran and Pakistan will shape regional dynamics significantly. The Indian government’s response to these developments will be critical in maintaining its influence and ensuring that India does not lose its foothold in the intricate web of Middle Eastern diplomacy.
