Coroner’s Inquiry Confirms Zubeen Garg’s Death as Accidental Drowning Amid Ongoing Investigations
In a recent development from Singapore, a coroner’s inquiry has concluded that noted Assamese singer Zubeen Garg tragically died due to accidental drowning. This revelation came from The Straits Times, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding his untimely death on September 19, just one day before he was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival in Singapore.
The coroner’s inquiry serves as a critical examination aimed at elucidating the causes and events leading to a person’s death. In Garg’s case, authorities had issued a death certificate on September 20, and subsequent evaluations in October and December reaffirmed the conclusion of drowning. However, the narrative surrounding his death took a contentious turn as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and others expressed skepticism, alleging a possible murder rather than an accident.
In connection with this high-profile case, seven individuals have been detained in India, with a Special Investigation Team submitting a chargesheet on December 12. This document accused four of the detained individuals of murder, a serious allegation that has cast a shadow over the circumstances of Garg’s demise. As the inquiry progresses, the investigation has revealed that Garg was reportedly “severely intoxicated” at the time of the incident and had declined to wear a life jacket while swimming.
On January 14, authorities in Singapore provided further details, emphasizing that Garg’s refusal to utilize safety gear contributed to the tragic incident. Addressing these findings, State Coroner Adam Nakhoda articulated that he found no grounds to dispute the conclusions drawn by the Police Coast Guard after meticulously reviewing the evidence presented.
The case has not only captivated fans of Zubeen Garg, whose music resonated deeply within Assamese culture, but has also sparked discussions regarding safety regulations and the importance of protective measures during aquatic activities. As the investigation unfolds and the legal proceedings continue, the musician’s family, fans, and the greater Assamese community await clarity on the issue.
