Crime and Security: International Arrests and Local Tragedy

The district of North 24 Parganas is currently a focal point of intense administrative and political activity as West Bengal prepares for the 2026 Assembly elections. From high-stakes international arrests to tragic domestic crimes, here is a breakdown of the key developments as of March 18, 2026.
⚖️ Crime and Security: International Arrests and Local Tragedy
The border town of Bongaon has become the center of a diplomatic and criminal investigation following the arrest of individuals linked to the murder of a high-profile Bangladeshi activist.
• Hadi Murder Suspects Apprehended: The West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) arrested two Bangladeshi nationals, identified as Faisal Karim Masud (alias Rahul) and Alamgir Hossain, in Bongaon. They are accused of the daylight murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson for the Inqilab Mancha in Dhaka, whose death in late 2025 sparked widespread protests in Bangladesh.
• Aiding the Escape: On March 15, a third suspect, Philip Sangma, was arrested for allegedly facilitating the illegal entry of the killers into India via the Meghalaya border. Diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway for their extradition.
• Deadly Explosion in Madhyamgram: Panic gripped the region following a bomb blast near a school in Madhyamgram. The victim, identified as Sacchidananda Mishra from Uttar Pradesh, was killed when a bag he was carrying exploded. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has since visited the site to probe potential terror links or illegal arms transport.
• Domestic Violence in Ghola: In a tragic local incident, a pregnant woman was allegedly murdered by her husband in Ghola. Initial reports suggest the motive was a dispute over money, highlighting a grim spike in domestic crimes in the district.
🗳️ Political Climate: The Road to 2026
With the 2026 Assembly elections on the horizon, the political temperature in North 24 Parganas is reaching a boiling point.
• Wall-Painting Disputes: In Bhatpara, long a volatile political zone, clashes have erupted over “wall-painting”—the traditional method of claiming territory for campaign messaging. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the CPIM have traded fierce allegations of intimidation and the “capture” of public spaces.
• Rising Rhetoric: Polarization remains intense, particularly in border-adjacent areas where issues of infiltration and national security are frequently used as electoral leverage by both the ruling party and the opposition.
🛡️ Administrative Overhaul: The EC Steps In
To ensure a “free and fair” election, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated a massive reshuffle of the state’s bureaucracy and police force, deeply impacting North 24 Parganas.
Key Official Changes (Effective March 17-18, 2026)
Position
New Appointee
Police Commissioner (Barrackpore)
Amit Kumar Singh
SP (Barasat)
Pushpa
SP (Basirhat)
Alakananda Bhowal
District Electoral Officer (N 24 Pgs)
Shilpa Gourisaria…

The ECI has mandated that all transferred officers assume their duties immediately. This “midnight reshuffle” has met with sharp criticism from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who labeled the move as an interference in the state’s administrative autonomy.
District Note: Residents are advised to stay alert as security cordons remain tight across the Bongaon and Basirhat border stretches following the recent arrests and the seizure of a large arms cache earlier this month.
