DMK Declines Participation in INDIA Bloc Meeting Amid Allegations of Betrayal by Congress

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a prominent political party in Tamil Nadu, has declared its decision to abstain from the upcoming meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc, scheduled for June 8. This strategic choice stems from the party’s sentiments of betrayal towards its long-time ally, the Congress party. A statement from the DMK underscored that its cadre felt ‘deeply hurt’ by actions they perceive as a betrayal of the voters who supported the Congress in the recent elections.

The friction between the DMK and Congress emerged following the recent political developments in Tamil Nadu. After the results of the state elections were announced in May, Congress extended its support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which has caused considerable discontent within the DMK. TR Baalu, a senior leader of the DMK, criticized the Congress for what he described as a betrayal of the electorate, raising questions about the integrity of political alliances and the promises made to voters.

Despite the decision to skip the June 8 meeting, the DMK affirmed its commitment to voice concerns regarding national welfare issues, even if those discussions are initiated by other parties attending the session. This indicates that while they may not be participating actively, the DMK intends to remain engaged in the broader conversation concerning national policies and issues of public interest.

In another significant development, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the arrival of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, marking the commencement of the crucial four-month rainy season. This year, the monsoon reached Kerala three days later than its usual onset date, generating anticipation and concern among farmers and agricultural stakeholders.

The IMD has further indicated that conditions are favorable for the monsoon to progress into additional regions, including Goa, parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, as well as the remaining areas of Tamil Nadu over the next few days. The timely arrival of the rains is crucial for India’s agricultural sector, which relies heavily on the monsoon for irrigation and crop production.
