Doctors Urge Immediate Implementation of National Exit Test (NExT) for MBBS Students
Leading medical professionals and academic institutions across India have called for the immediate implementation of the National Exit Test (NExT) to standardize medical education and improve healthcare outcomes.
Members of the Resident Doctors Association, Student Association of AIIMS Delhi, along with faculty from premier institutions including AIIMS Delhi, Nagpur, Patna, and RML Hospital, emphasized that the current system of undergraduate medical assessment remains fragmented and inconsistent.
In a recent editorial published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, experts highlighted that existing evaluation mechanisms are poorly aligned with competency-based training and fail to ensure uniform standards across institutions.
The proposed NExT aims to introduce a single, transparent, and competency-based national examination, serving as a common platform for MBBS certification, licensure, and postgraduate admissions.
Medical experts believe that implementing NExT will:
* Establish a uniform national benchmark for clinical competence
* Enhance transparency and accountability
* Strengthen public trust in healthcare professionals
The authors have also recommended structured preparatory support for students, including mock tests, sample papers, and detailed syllabus guidelines to ensure smooth implementation.
Experts view this move as a crucial reform to modernize India’s medical education system and align it with global standards.
